This hard-to-find catalog was published in conjunction with a major exhibition of Hans Hofmann’s work that opened in June 1990 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. An excellent introduction to the life and work of the man frequently called the “dean of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism,” this volume includes color illustrations of more than 100 of Hofmann’s masterful paintings. His renown as a brilliant teacher, whose students included Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Rivers, Lee Krasner, and Wolf Kahn, almost overshadowed his importance as an artist during his lifetime. In recent years, however, Hofmann is increasingly being recognized as a major artist in his own right.
