Gallery Talk with Artist Tom Marioni

Tom Marioni, a pioneer of Conceptual art, discusses his work, as well as works from the archive of the Museum of Conceptual Art, on view in Mind Over Matter.

A pioneer of Conceptual art who has been experimenting at the boundaries of art for over forty years, Marioni creates sculpture, drawings, and prints that incorporate sound, video, and light. He is best known for his seminal performance-installation The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends Is the Highest Form of Art, an ongoing work first presented in 1970 at the Oakland Museum of California. That same year, Marioni opened the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco, arguably the nation’s first alternative art space.
